29 May What are macros and why are they important? Watch Heat & Eat Lean’s Jonny explain how they’re key to keeping a lean diet
Given you’re reading this blog, I’m going to assume that you have heard the term “macros” a lot when it comes to food.
It’s one of the most common words thrown about when discussions turn to having a good diet, but many people I speak to – friends, family, Heat & Eat Lean customers – often tell me that they don’t really understand what macros are and what they mean for eating well.
So if you struggle with the concept of them, don’t worry – you’re not alone. With that in mind, I wanted to put together a quick blog and video which breaks down exactly what macros are and how you can use them to create a bespoke diet which genuinely fulfills your body’s requirements. But before I get to the video, a bit of background…
What are macros?
Macros are short for macronutrients – protein, carbohydrates and fats – which are essentially the three main “ingredients” for your body to have energy to survive, function, grow, repair and just about everything else you can think of. This includes building up the calories to help you maintain a healthy, lean weight. In contrast, micronutrients – which are found in more “wholesome” foods – include other important elements such as vitamins and minerals.
See me explain further in our latest video below – including why you should treat your body like a car…

How much should I be eating to satisfy my body’s needs?
You need 1.5g-2g of protein per kilo of body weight – so based on my weight of 92kg, I need around 180g of protein per day.
You also need 0.8g-1.2g of fat per kilo of body weight – meaning I need 92g of fat daily. Depending on your diet, you’ll have more or less each of fats/carbs, but the key is keeping protein and calorie levels the same, with the rest working itself out depending on preference and what works for you.
